Live Rock concerts were the rage in the 80's and they drove countless kids to buy their first electric guitars. In this day and age, video games like Guitar Hero World Tour are having a similar effect.

The heart of all heavy rock music does not just lie with the words; it also lies with the electric guitar and the various sounds that it can produce. There are so many kids across the block who would give anything to play like David Gilmour,John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Angus Young etc. These men are not just some of the best guitarists of their times, they are legends.

Now if you are interested in discovering how to play the guitar then the first thing you will need to do is buy one. A lot of people start with an acoustic and graduate to the electric. It is sometimes quite overwhelming for anyone to select the right guitar initially, since there are literally 1000's of brands out there on the market. If you're getting an electric guitar then you'll also need to buy an amp, pick-ups, picks, a tuner etc.

Electric guitars can be bought in a huge variety of shapes and designs with the aerodynamic designs being one of the most popular. But hold back! Don't purchase the 1st guitar you see. You need to look around and check out the wide range of prices and vast array of models before you buy one. In actual fact, one of the coolest ways to choose a guitar is by the brand or by the style. Here's my take on the four important styles:

Stratocaster - This certainly is a show stealer and has a typical style. The most famous is the red and white color combination, which was shredded extensively by Knopfler of Dire Straits. The Strato is from Fender and has a neck attached to the guitar body. Apart from this, it has dual cutaway sides, 22 frets accompanied by a wammy arrangement and three single-coil pickups. Fender designed the first Stratocaster in the early 50's. Some of the popular designs include:

* Deluxe Stratocaster: Approx $550 * Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster HSS in Rosewood: Approx $1200 * Fender Standard Stratocaster Electric in Maple: Approx $350 * Standard Strat Electric: Approx $500 * Fender Stratocaster Eric Johnson Signature model: Approx $1850

Telecaster (Also known as the 'Tele') - The Telecaster is another phenomenal instrument from Fenders. It is more than just another axe; it is a complete band. It is a solid body guitar and comprises of twin pick-ups. The first Telecaster was produced by Leo Fender in the 1940's and has a single cutaway body. It doesn't have the wammy bar but has two different single-coil pickups. Some of the popular Telecaster models include:

* Fender American Tele HS guitar: $950-$1100 * Standard Tele: $350-$650 * Fender 63 Telecaster Relic Solid Body: $2500-$3100 * Fender 72 Tele Custom: $700-$850

Les Paul - This extraordinary electric guitar was designed by Gibson for some of the rock stars of the era. The striking feature of a Gibson Les Paul electric is its set neck construction, which means there are no bolts. The body is a single cutaway and rounded. It is furnished with 2 humbucker pickups as well as a elevated scratch-plate. If you want to play distorted sound then this great guitar will provide you with a vast range. Some of the well known guitarists who use the Les Pauls include Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Slash (ex-Guns'n'Roses). Some of the famous Les Paul models include:

* Les Paul Custom Guitar: $3000-$3550 * 1959 Les Paul Standard: $5500-$6050 * Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Guitar: $750-$800 * Les Paul Classic Electric: $1800-$1900

The Gibson Brand - Gibson is one of the greatest brands in music and all their models are classics and shoud not be compared to the others. Gibson was actually founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson and has been singly accountable for providing the world some of the most innovative guitars. A couple of the famous models include the arch-top L5 model and the Flying V etc. Some of the legends who have shredded on a Gibson or are still using it include Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) and Frank Zappa to name a couple. Some of the most popular models include:

* Gibson Flying V: $500-$600 * SG 61 Classic Guitar: $1500-$1600 * Faded SG Special Guitar: $550-$600 * Gibson Explorer Pro: $1100-$1200

These are some of the most well known brands of electric guitars. The other aspects that will help you to pick up a guitar include the shape of the fretboard, the type of pick-ups, and the body. Full-bodied guitars are normally favored as they can generate some of the best noises that you will ever get to hear.
